LEARNING SUPPORT

The Learning Center at BMA is designed to help students become active participants in their academic careers. One-on-one time with the Learning Specialist is available to students with documented learning differences or those who need additional support and structure to achieve academic success. Students meet with the Learning Specialist, usually four times per week as part of their course schedule, to craft and implement strategies to be successful in the classroom. The Learning Specialist also communicates closely with faculty members to ensure learning plans and accommodations are implemented in the classroom. The ultimate goal of the Learning Center is to meet students where they are and help them develop the skills necessary to be successful independently in their future academic endeavors.

ESL PROGRAM

The ESL (English as a Second Language) program at Burke Mountain Academy is a multifaceted, real-time support model. At the beginning of the year, incoming students are assessed to identify linguistic and academic strengths and areas for growth. Each student then works with the ESL instructor to develop short- and long-term goals for English and academic development throughout their time at BMA. This support is offered on a case-by-case basis, and BMA may require non-native English speakers to participate in the ESL program.

THE LEARNING CENTER

At BMA, we encourage students to advocate for themselves and seek out resources to develop further the critical skills that enable success in and beyond the classroom. Every student is welcome to drop by the Learning Center for additional support in any subject or to utilize a quiet workspace.  We also have a designated block built into the daily schedule where all faculty are in their classrooms, and students are expected to find a teacher or classroom to work in.  This block allows learning to extend beyond class time and provides ample time for individualized instruction and support.
