Junior Program

The BMA Junior Program offers a strong, fundamentals-based, ski curriculum derived from our national ski federation’s (USSA) ski education program.

The fundamental elements of skiing are essential for a life-long enjoyment of the sport, as well as progress in athletic ski competition at every level. We also understand, and hold true, that the love of skiing is critical to meeting the many challenges our sport offers.

Families are the core strength of our program; we rely on their volunteerism and support for our success.

Program Philosophy - In the BMA Junior program we teach skiing first and then teach how to compete in ski racing, all the while helping kids love the sport. Our curriculum is based on the most common fundamental elements of skiing as promoted by the USSA National Development System. Finn Gunderson, Director of Coaches Education at the USSA (and former BMA head) and Jesse Hunt, Alpine Director for the US Ski Team (and a BMA Alumnus) are working hard to build consistency in the pedagogy of ski racing in this country.  We endorse this system fully.  A BMA Junior Program athlete will learn the same terminology and message that he or she will use in the Academy Program and even up through the US Ski Team system. This continuity is vital.

Athlete Groupings – The same material is delivered to every athlete in the program regardless of group. Where appropriate we will organize ability level groupings to better deliver our curriculum. This may combine different ages, etc. Thank you in advance for your trust in making the right choices for your child’s alpine development.

Community – Community is an important part of our program at Burke Mountain Academy. We want to start teaching these values, where appropriate, to our Junior Program Athletes. Respect for the individual, good sportsmanship, respect for each other, respect for our mountain and the mountains we visit are key components to the overall success of our program.
