American Studies is a double-block, interdisciplinary English and history course for 11th graders. Students study U. S. History
and American Literature simultaneously in an effort to draw parallels between historical eras and the literature of those times.
Utilizing an Advanced Placement history textbook, the course focuses on essay composition and document-based responses as well as
determining causal relationships between the events that have shaped the United States. Corresponding literature includes
The Crucible, Walden, How the Other Half Lives, A Separate Peace, On The Road, and Friday Night Lights. Student-led discussions
on national and international current events occur weekly. Ultimately, students analyze what it means to be American in a world
increasingly dominated by trends of globalization.
