Coaching Staff
 

ADAM CHADBOURNE – ALPINE PROGRAM DIRECTOR and WOMEN'S ALPINE HEAD COACH 
BA, Bates College, 1997, USSA Internationally Certified Coach. Adam is returning for his fourth year as Alpine Program Director at BMA following six years with the US Ski Team.  While with the US Team Adam worked as the head coach of the men’s Europa Cup SL/GS group and as the head of the Men’s Development Team.  Prior to his work with the men’s team he led J3/J4 development efforts for the USSA, serving as the Youth Development Coach (running Eastern and NDS youth projects including Topolino and training camps around the world).  Adam lives in Lyndon Center with his wife Alison and their daughter Emma.


MEN'S FIS TEAM

DARRELL GRAY – MEN’S ALPINE HEAD COACH, DIRECTOR OF STRENGTH & CONDITIONING
BS, Appalachian State University 1986; Graduate Studies, North Carolina State University 1988-89, USST Domestic Coach of the Year, 2006.  2007-08 marks Darrell’s 11th year at Burke Mountain Academy. This will be his 4th year as Men’s Alpine Head Coach and Director of Strength and Conditioning, with previous years spent working with both the men and women’s programs. Darrell and his wife Lisa are dorm parents in the Willoughby House where they live with their children Haley (16), Zach (14) and Kate (9).

VLADIMIR DZUGAS – MEN'S ALPINE COACH
MS Physical Education and Sport, Alpine Skiing, University of Commensky, 1981 Vladimir is from Slovakia and served as the Head Coach of the Japanese Men’s Downhill Ski Team with whom he coached from 1999-2002.  Prior to coaching with the Japanese team he worked with the US Ski Team Men’s and Women’s Ski Team and coached at both the 1994 and 1998 Olympic Games (he attended the 2002 Olympics with the Japan Ski Team).  Vlado also coached at Stratton Mountain School in 1991-1992 where he was the Head Women’s Coach and with the Alpine Head Coach at the Univ. of Colorado Ski Team in 1990-1991.  Vladimir and his wife, Eva, have three children:  Lucia (25),  David (18), and Vladko (14).

BRADLEY WALL - MEN'S ALPINE COACH
This is Brad’s second year coaching at BMA after a long career competing at the very highest level of our sport.  He is a graduate of BMA ('97) and Dartmouth College ('03).  Among his many ski racing accomplishments he is a two time Olympian (competing this last season in Italy, and also in Salt Lake City in 2002), three time Alpine World Championships competitor, and a 5 time Australian National Champion.  He was a member of the Australian National Team for a full 10 years.  While at Dartmouth he was a 2 time NCAA all American, was the 2003 NCAA SL champion, and was twice the Dartmouth Ski Team Skier of the Year.

BRENDAN LEVINE – MEN’S ALPINE COACH
St. Lawrence University, B.A. Fine Arts, 2006
After watching his two sisters at school in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, Brendan decided it looked like fun and has joined the staff as assistant men's alpine coach. Brendan is also our resident graphic designer.  A four-year member of the SLU Alpine Ski Team, Brendan also participated in many other outdoor activities such as rock climbing and white water kayaking.  After attending Carrabassett Valley Academy for high school, he deferred his entrance to Saint Lawerence University for a year in order attend Oppdal Videregaaende Skole, a small ski academy in Norway's Trondelag region.

 

WOMEN'S FIS TEAM

ROLF GIDLOW – WOMEN'S ALPINE COACH
University of Minnesota, Piano Performance, Music Theory & Composition
USST Domestic Coach of the Year, 1993. An alpine ski coach for 35 years, Rolf moved to Vermont from his home state of Minnesota in 1989.  2005/06 will be his 14th year at BMA (he is starting his third year back after a four year hiatus).  Described by some (but not by himself) as a ‘renaissance man’, he has a wide range of interests.  He plays several musical instruments, and has enjoyed overseeing the burgeoning musical scene at BMA in the past year.  He is working on some new musical arrangements for the coming year in the hope that music will occupy an even larger place in the BMA community.  He has several hobbies; foremost among them are poetry, reading, and playing golf as often as possible.

AMBER MCHUGH - WOMEN’S ALPINE COACH
BS, Saint Michael's College, 2003. A native of Southern Vermont, and a graduate of Wilmington High School, Amber then attended Saint Michael's College where she was a member and captain of both the Women's Varsity Soccer and Alpine Ski Teams.  She comes to Burke after coaching with the Mount Washington Valley Ski Team in New Hampshire for the past 4 seasons.  She has experience coaching at both Eastern and USST National Development System camps and competition trips.  She has worked with FIS aged athletes from development to national levels.  Amber enjoys a variety of athletic activities in her free time including biking, rock climbing, hiking, swimming and running.

J3 PROGRAM

KIRK DWYER – HEADMASTER, HEAD J3 COACH
BA, Johnson State College, 1975.  USSA Domestic Coach of the Year 1989, International Coaches Certification, Past Chairman of Eastern Development Committee and USSA National Development Committee, and currently Eastern Alpine Competition Committee Chairman.  Worked at the Green Mt. Valley School for 25 years.  Responsibilities included:  Assistant Headmaster from 1989-2000, Head Women’s Coach from 1987-2000, Head Coach 1980-86, Head Men’s Coach 1979-86, was the primary coach of 26 US Ski Team athletes while at GMVS and taught English, Humanities, and Economics.  Kirk and his wife, Robin, and their nine-year-old son, Chase, enjoy spending time on the coast of Maine during the summer.  Kirk has been BMA’s Headmaster since the Fall of 2000.

CHRISTIN LATHROP – DIRECTOR OF ADMISSIONS, J3 COACH
B.A. History, Dartmouth College 2005. After graduating from Green Mountain Valley School in 1999, Christin skied on the U.S. Development Ski Team and was a member of the 2001 World Junior Team. She spent years three racing Europa Cups and Nor-ams. Christin then skied for Dartmouth for two years where she was an All American in 2005 and received Academic All-American honors in 2004 & 2005. Most recently she worked at Beaupre & Co., Public Relations in Portsmouth, NH. Christin enjoys spending time with her family, reading, photography and learning. She also loves all sports including tennis, soccer, hiking, surfing, road biking and running.

REBEKAH LEVINE – J3 COACH
Bekah joined our staff in 2004 and has been loving teaching and coaching at BMA for the last several years.  She looks forward to another excellent winter of coaching the J3's.  Growing up in Maine, Bekah spent her winters skiing at Sugarloaf where she went on to attend Carrabassett Valley Academy and eventually took her skiing skills to the college circuit.  She raced for both Williams College and Montana State University, as well as spending time racing and training in Norway.  At Williams, Bekah was an Academic All-American as a member of the ski team and graduated in 2003 with honors in Geosciences along with majoring in American Studies.  The summer of 2007 brought the completion of Bekah's Masters of Science in Science Education at Montana State University in Bozeman.  As part of her degree, she has spent the past two summers hiking and kayaking the creeks and lakes of Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge in Southwest Montana conducting a fisheries study.  Bekah loves playing outside and in her quieter moments can be found gobbling up a good book as fast as she can eat a piece of Maine blueberry pie. 

CHRISTINE J. FEEHAN – J3 COACH
BA History, Skidmore College, 2003; MA Liberal Studies/Creative Writing, Dartmouth College, 2004
Christine comes to BMA after teaching and coaching at Sugar Bowl Academy in California for the past two years.  She graduated magna cum laude from Skidmore College where she captained the Alpine Ski Team from 1999-2001.  She has since coached on the Ford Sayre and Colby-Sawyer College staffs.  In addition to skiing, Christine played varsity ice hockey at Skidmore and was a member of the Adirondack Luge Club, an affiliate of USA Luge.  Christine's current hobbies include mountain biking, backpacking, rock climbing, and
freelance writing.  In 2006, she was named to Who's Who Among American Teachers.


NORDIC TEAM

PETE PHILLIPS – HEAD NORDIC COACH
BA in Scandinavian Studies and English, U of Washington 1969. Pete comes to BMA from the New York Ski Education Foundation in Lake Placid and has previously worked with Nordic programs in Idaho, Montana, and Maine, squeezing in 30 summers of commercial fishing in Alaska along the way. He has been a coach for the US Scandinavian Cup Team, and the US World Junior Team, as well as having organized summer and spring training and competition trips to Sweden and Norway. Pete has also arranged for visiting Scandinavian athletes to spend time with US programs, and is a new member of the NENSA Jr. Committee. Interests beyond skiing are sailing, reading,
bird hunting, fishing and food.

CARINA HAMEL – ASSISTANT NORDIC COACH
B.A., European Studies, UVM 2007. Carina comes to us this year off the Eastern collegiate circuit where she skied four years for the University of Vermont.  She is a graduate of BMA ('03) and UVM ('07).  Carina has been cross country skiing since the age of two, and has traveled to Europe several times to compete and train.  She lived in Norway when she was 16 to train with the one of the most advanced cultures of skiing, and learned small details that continue to improve her skiing.  This past year, Carina finished off the season with the leader bib for the Eastern circuit in the classic technique. Being away for four years, Carina is excited to be back at Burke! 


JUNIOR PROGRAM

STEVE BERLACK - JUNIOR PROGRAM DIRECTOR
BA University of New Hampshire 1981, USSA National Certified Alpine Coach. Steve is entering his third year with the BMA Junior Program following five years with the BMA Alpine FIS groups. Steve coached FIS men at BMA for three years and FIS Women for two years. He also served as alpine program director for one year. Prior to coming to BMA Steve, and his family, lived in Europe where he coached for Poland with the Europa Cup and World Cup group. Steve and his Wife Cindy, 9 year old Carolyn, and 13 year old Ronnie live in Franconia, NH and East Burke, VT.


ATHLETIC TRAINING

GREG DELUKE – ATHLETIC TRAINER
BS Secondary Education Exercise Science, Butler University. Masters in Athletic Training, Texas Tech University.  Over the past several years Greg has worked with athletes at the high school, div 1 and professional levels.  Last year as a graduate student he worked directly with the Div 1 Texas Tech football team.  He has also worked with high school athletes in a variety of sports and served as an intern at a high level sport performance facility.  Greg is an NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist.  Greg’s strong credentials as an athletic trainer, extensive background in strength and conditioning, love of skiing and the outdoors, and overall enthusiasm make him a great fit for BMA

Burke Continues a Tradition of Athletic Excellence
Since 1970, over 100 BMA graduates have been members of the US Ski Team or skied on other National Teams. 45 have been Olympians. BMA is the most successful program of its kind in the US.
Burke's College Placement Record is Remarkable
Since the founding of the school, over 50% of BMA graduates have attended highly selective schools such as Dartmouth, Middlebury and Williams.
