TOM
DE CARLO DIRECTOR OF ACADEMICS, ENGLISH TEACHER

Graduate School
of Education, 1990. Tom has been a Hurricane Island Outward Bound instructor,
sailed transatlantic in 1972, owned and managed an Italian restaurant, and has
bike toured in Italy, Ireland and New Zealand. These days, when not
tending to BMA duties, he's pulling garden weeds and helping his wife Hilary
take care of Sobota and Cody (horses), Kenai (a Lab/German Short Haired
Pointer), and Freida Lulu, an orange and white striped cat.
VIVIAN
BUCKLEY MATH TEACHER

After teaching 12 years in area private and public schools, Viv finally found
her way to BMA in 2005. She considers her position at
BMA to be the ideal job. Viv and her husband Dave
continue to work on the house they’ve been building since 1996. They
manage their 200 acre property in Waterford,
VT for wood, wildlife and
recreation. Waterford
is the perfect spot because it lies between The White Mountains of NH and East
Burke, VT, Viv’s favorite places to bike, hike and ski.
ALISON
CHADBOURNE WINTER TERM MATH & HISTORY Teacher

Alison has been teaching in public and private schools for four years.
Prior to earning her Masters Degree in teaching and learning she spent four
years working in neuroscience and psychology laboratories at Dartmouth College
and the University
of Utah. She is the
proud mother of two young girls and is married to Alpine Director Adam.
David
IVERSON - Science & Math Teacher

2005 VARA Alpine Official of the year.
Despite having Midwestern parents, and a degree from K-State, David was born
and raised in Syracuse, New York. A lifelong Nordic skier,
David's first job out of grad school introduced him to the concept of the ski
academy. Fifteen years later, he is excited to be returning for his third
year at BMA. When he is not teaching or timing races, he will most likely
be on top of a mountain, skiing up or down hills, or generally off in the woods
somewhere.
REID
JEWETT HUMANITIES TEACHER
BA American History, Boston University M.A. American
History, Brown University
A native of Washington, DC,
Reid has been living in Boston
for the last three years while completing her undergraduate and graduate
degrees in American History. Before moving to Boston,
Reid spent two years at Wesleyan University, where she cultivated her interest in
black history by studying comparative slavery in the Americas. Though new to the
Kingdom, Reid has spent summers in the Adirondack Mountains and is looking
forward to moving to Vermont
full time for her first winter in the mountains.
Marysia
Miernowska - ART Teacher & Spanish Tutor
Marysia graduated with honors and with three BAs from
the University of
Minnesota, in 2005: Art,
Architecture, and Spanish & Portuguese Studies. Her sense of adventure and
passion for art and languages has taken her all over the world. After getting
married to David (French Teacher) in France,
she worked as a community organizer and designer in California. She joined BMA in 2007 and
lives with David in Moulton. Marysia continues to work independently as an
artist and is passionate about teaching art to people of all ages. She
spent this last summer teaching at an art camp in the
Berkshires and is excited about bringing new media into the art program. In
her free time, Marysia loves to paint, dance, hike, ski, snow shoe, bike,
garden, read, learn, and practice yoga.
David Sainsily - FRENCH teacher
David joined BMA in 2007. He was born in
French Guiana (South America), an overseas department of France. He graduated from the University of Paul Valery,
France
in English and Portuguese. After marrying Marysia (Art teacher), and teaching
French in Brazil for a
month, he moved to California where he taught
French at the Sierra
College. During the
summer of 2009, David directed a French Language Immersion program for Middlebury-Monterey Language
Academy and The Center for Talented
Youth (Johns Hopkins University,
MD). David loves snowboarding,
playing soccer and basketball.
LAUREN STRUCK CHEMISTRY

Lauren grew up in the Midwest, but has been living in the Northeast Kingdom
since 2000. After working at a local boarding school for four years, Lauren
joined the Burke community in 2004. Though she knew nothing about the ski
racing world when she arrived, she quickly learned to appreciate the passion
and dedication of students and staff alike. She currently lives in Sutton
with her husband, Jamie, and two young children McKinley (4) and Holden (2).
In between her responsibilities at Burke and at home, Lauren can be found
exploring the mountain on her telemark skis or her mountain bike, depending on
the season.
PETE PHILLIPS HUMANITIES
TEACHER
BA in Scandinavian Studies and English, U of Washington 1969. This is
Pete’s 4th year as head Nordic Coach at Burke. Pete previously worked
with programs in Sun Valley, Idaho,
Whitefish and Bozeman, Montana,
and in Lake Placid, New York. He has been a coach for the
US Scandinavian Cup Team, and the US World Junior Team, as well as having
organized summer and spring training and competition trips to Sweden and Norway. He brought "The Sweden
Trip,” a training tour in cooperation with the Solleftea Ski Gymnasium in Sweden, to
BMA with him, and ran it for the 9th summer this year. Pete has also
arranged for visiting Scandinavian athletes to spend time with US programs, and
is chairman of the NENSA Jr. Committee. Special interests for the program at
BMA are to continue to develop the classroom side of xc ski
racing with courses in the "why's and how's" of training,
building a solid program for resident and PG athletes, and creating an active
exchange of people and information with European ski academies. Interests
beyond skiing are sailing, reading, bird hunting, fishing and food.
