Burke Mountain Academy Winter Tutorial 2007-2008 Core Curriculum

English
Teacher: Jillian Shepard

English students will explore the themes of diversity and relationships by studying works by Lowry, Steinbeck, Shakespeare and Harper Lee, making connections to their own personal experiences as well as the BMA Honor Code.  Additionally, the Daybook of Critical Reading and Writing will allow for more detailed response notes and empower students to write short analyses that will prepare them for longer, more critical interpretations.  Using this writing process, English  students will learn the importance of close observation, focusing ideas, precise word choice, and thesis formulation in order to produce concise, multi-paged expository essays by the end of winter term.
